Which Medicare Option Works Best for Snowbirds?

For retirees who split their time between states, commonly known as “snowbirds,” having the right Medicare coverage is about more than just benefits. It’s about flexibility, access, and peace of mind while traveling. Choosing the wrong plan could leave you without coverage in your winter (or summer) home. So, which Medicare option works best for snowbirds?
Let’s break it down.
The two most common types of Medicare coverage are Original Medicare with a Medigap plan and Medicare Advantage (Part C). Each comes with its own rules regarding coverage, provider networks, and travel.
Original Medicare, when paired with a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan and a standalone Part D prescription drug plan, offers nationwide coverage. As long as the provider accepts Medicare, you’re covered, whether you're in Florida, Michigan, or anywhere in between. This flexibility is a huge plus for snowbirds. In fact, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, about 43% of Medicare beneficiaries choose Original Medicare with the option to add supplemental coverage.
On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans are typically network-based. Most operate within local or regional provider networks, meaning you could face limited access, or out-of-network charges, if you spend part of the year out of state. Some Medicare Advantage PPOs offer out-of-network coverage, but at a higher cost, and HMO plans may provide no coverage at all outside of emergency situations.
That said, Medicare Advantage plans can offer extra perks like dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits, which can be attractive. As of 2023, nearly 50% of Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, according to CMS.
If you’re a snowbird, the decision often comes down to this: Do you prioritize the freedom to see any provider nationwide, or are you comfortable staying within a more limited provider network in exchange for extra benefits?
Tip: Before you make your choice, review provider access in both your home state and your seasonal destination, and ask your agent to walk you through potential out-of-network scenarios.
